Peanut paste saves lives

Peanut paste saves lives - UNICEF battles against famines

Small, silver packages with peanut paste revolutionised the treatment of children suffering from life-threatening malnutrition. The nourishing paste consists of peanuts, oil, sugar, milk powder, vitamins and important mineral nutrients. It is made to last, ready for eating and does not go bad in big heat. Health workers or mothers can give the paste themselves to the children, they do not have to go to the hospital. UNICEF has supported the producers of peanut paste for the past years, especially in developing countries. UNICEF is the main distributor of the highly effective additional nutrition worldwide. A child suffering from consumption gets the treatment within several weeks and gets about 150 packages of peanut paste during this time. Then, it has regained its strength. In one package of peanut paste, there are 500 large calories.

Incomprehensible, but true: UNICEF estimates that every fourth toddler in the world suffers from a chronic malnutrition! This has dramatic consequences on their development, as the girls and boys retard in their mental and physical functions. With the distribution of peanut paste, UNICEF helps children suffering from an acute consumption - and does everything possible to prevent children from getting in a life-threatening condition.
